WaPo 'journalists' furious over pro-freedom direction

Journalists at the Washington Post are enraged after WaPo owner Jeff Bezos announced that the paper’s opinion section will promote freedom.
Billionaire Democrat discovers patriotism
“We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets,” Bezos wrote in an email to employees, which he then posted on X. “We’ll cover other topics too of course, but viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others.
“There was a time when a newspaper, especially one that was a local monopoly, might have seen it as a service to bring to the reader’s doorstep every morning a broad-based opinion section that sought to cover all views. Today, the internet does that job.”
Bezos said he was proud to be American and advocated freedom.
“I am of America and for America, and proud to be so,” he wrote. “Our country did not get here by being typical. And a big part of America’s success has been freedom in the economic realm and everywhere else. Freedom is ethical — it minimizes coercion — and practical — it drives creativity, invention, and prosperity.”
The Amazon founder said that when he presented the idea to WaPo Opinion Editor David Shipley, the editor chose to resign rather than adopt a pro-freedom narrative. The paper has a notoriously radical Left-wing bias, which Bezos began trying to tone down last year as Donald Trump’s election victory neared.
“I’m confident that free markets and personal liberties are right for America,” the billionaire concluded. “I also believe these viewpoints are underserved in the current market of ideas and news opinion. I’m excited for us together to fill that void.”
Left-wing ‘journalists’ express outrage
Shipley was not the only Amazon employee to express displeasure. Chief Economics Reporter Jeff Stein claimed to be concerned that “dissenting views will not be published.”
“Massive encroachment by Jeff Bezos into The Washington Post’s opinion section today - makes clear dissenting views will not be published or tolerated there,” he wrote on X. “I still have not felt encroachment on my journalism on the news side of coverage, but if Bezos tries interfering with the news side I will be quitting immediately and letting you know.”
As of this report, WaPo’s Opinions section still features exclusively extreme Left-wing articles.
WaPo Columnist Philip Bump reportedly reacted to Bezos’ announcement by writing: “What the actual f***.”
The Washington Post has been radically anti-Trump, running several pieces comparing the president to Adolf Hitler. At least one article claimed that the comparison “belittles Hitler.” In October 2024, as the presidential election loomed and WaPo continued to suffer financial losses amid declining readership, Bezos began talking about softening the publication’s bias. He forbade the paper from endorsing Kamala Harris, which sent employees into a meltdown. After the election, the billionaire Democrat enthusiastically congratulated Trump.
