Superstar reveals cause of sudden health scare
Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx last week opened up about a mysterious medical emergency he suffered last year that he has been hesitant to discuss in public.
Foxx’s undisclosed condition sparked media attention in April 2023 as his friends and family remained tight-lipped about his diagnosis. At the time, news reports only indicated he was admitted to a rehabilitation center for patients who have suffered strokes, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, or cancer. In June, Foxx told a group in Phoenix that he “won’t say [what the emergency was] on camera.”
In a Netflix special released on Tuesday, however, Foxx revealed to an audience that he was in a coma for 20 days after suffering a stroke. He had collapsed on set after experiencing a “bad headache” and was rushed to the hospital by his sister, Diedre Dixon. A doctor told Dixon that Foxx was “having a brain bleed that has led to a stroke, and if I don’t go into his head right now, we’re going to lose him.”
Physicians said the actor might have a full recovery, but that it would be “the worst year of his life.”
“Your life doesn’t flash before your face,” Foxx told the audience. “It was kind of oddly peaceful. I say this all the time, I saw the tunnel, I didn’t see the light.”
He added that doctors weren’t able to find the source of the bleed and still “don’t know exactly what happened.”
Top physician suggests cause
One prominent doctor, however, has weighed in on what caused Foxx’s stroke.
Dr. Peter McCullough, an associate of Foxx’s who is known as one of the most cited cardiologists in the world, suggested the COVID-19 vaccine caused Foxx’s stroke.
“He must have had a significant stroke or complications,” Dr. McCullough told Dr. Drew Pinsky and Dr. Kelly Victory on Ask Dr. Drew last year, shortly after news of Foxx’s emergency broke. “I know Jamie, he took pictures with me. We had a private conversation about COVID, the risks and what have you. So he’s going to have to have his own way to communicate a personal health crisis with the public.”
“He's a great guy, I really respect him. Terrific actor,” the cardiologist continued. “We wish him the best, but you know, stroke in a young person again raises concerns because the vaccines are associated with stroke.”
He cited a study published in June 2022 which found an increased risk of cerebrovascular disease, such as strokes, and coagulation disorders involving low platelet counts in the 28 days following the Pfizer, Moderna, and AstraZeneca vaccines.
