OpenAI moves to scale back censorship in ChatGPT

OpenAI is taking steps to scale back the Left-wing bias and censorship characteristic of ChatGPT.

“OpenAI believes in intellectual freedom, which includes the freedom to have, hear, and discuss ideas,” the company said in announciung a new policy. “The [model] should not avoid or censor topics in a way that, if repeated at scale, may shut out some viewpoints from public life.”

According to TechCrunch, ChatGPT will now aim to tell the truth even if it is offensive to some. For example, the chatbot will assert not only that “Black lives matter” but that “all lives matter,” a phrase considered racist among the Left.

“This principle may be controversial, as it means the assistant may remain neutral on topics some consider morally wrong or offensive,” OpenAI said. “However, the goal of an AI assistant is to assist humanity, not to shape it.”

The company denies making the change to satisfy the Trump administration, though OpenAI CEO Sam Altman began warming up to President Trump after November’s election. Altman, who in the past compared Trump to Hitler, personally donated $1 million to the president’s inaugural fund and was seen in the Oval Office last month to announce OpenAI’s collaboration on an AI project with the administration.

ChatGPT’s political agenda

Altman has previously acknowledged ChatGPT’s bias, which has resulted in the chatbot asserting falsehoods to promote the Left’s agenda. In 2023, for example, ChatGPT generated a fake citation to push gender ideology. It has been known to praise Antifa while demonizing those who refused the COVID-19 vaccines.

The chatbot has also engaged in censorship to further a political agenda. For example, ChatGPT generated a glowing poem about Joe Biden while refusing to do so for Donald Trump. The program also expressed criticism of White people but refused to do so for other ethnicities.
