Italy elects first female prime minister; elites furious
Italy elected its first-ever female prime minister last week in an unexpected victory for the Right, ahead of the United States and other European countries who have yet to elect a female leader.
But while mainstream media often bemoan the paucity of female-led countries, they are furious at the ascendancy of Giorgia Meloni.
To hear EuroNews describe her, “Giorgia Meloni is the leader of Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d’Italia), a hard-right, nationalist party which directly descends from the post-fascist Italian Social Movement (Movimento Sociale Italiano).”
The BBC warns that “Ms Meloni is widely expected to form Italy's most right-wing government since World War Two” and “[t]hat will alarm much of Europe as Italy is the EU's third-biggest economy.”
The New York Times similarly called Meloni “the leader of the nationalist Brothers of Italy, a party descended from the remnants of fascism, had led a right-wing coalition to a majority in Parliament, defeating a fractured left and a resurgent anti-establishment movement.” The Times also warned that now “formerly taboo and marginalized parties with Nazi or fascist heritages are entering the mainstream — and winning elections — across Europe.”
Television outlets, including CBS News, ABC News, NBC News, PBS News, MSNBC, CNN, Good Morning America, have all used the phrase "roots in post-WWII neo-fascism" when talking about Meloni. Most have parroted the phrase that she is ushering in “the most Right-wing government since Mussolini.”
MSNBC also called her “a hardcore neo-fascist militant.”
But the mainstream media are not the only ones waging war on Meloni. They are joined by the tech oligarchy.
Last week, the National Review reported that YouTube had removed a speech of Meloni’s that went viral for its passionate defense of “God, family and country” and attack on the globalist establishment.
“Why is the family an enemy? Why is the family so frightening?” questioned Meloni in her fiery address. “There is a single answer to all these questions. Because it defines us. Because it is our identity. Because everything that defines us is now an enemy for those who would like us to no longer have an identity and to simply be perfect consumer slaves.”
“I can’t define myself as Italian, Christian, woman, mother. No. I must be Citizen X, Gender X, Parent 1, Parent 2,” the incoming prime minister said. “I must be a number, because when I am only a number, when I no longer have an identity or roots, then I will be the perfect slave at the mercy of financial speculators. The perfect consumer.”
“Those things that disgust people so much,” she added, “we will do it to defend our freedom because we will never be slaves and simple consumers at the mercy of financial speculators. That is our mission.”
YouTube removed the video for “violating YouTube’s Community Guidelines,” though it did not explain how – nor was there any hint in the guidelines.
That video also appears to have been shadowbanned by Twitter last week – meaning that while the video remains on the platform, Twitter is trying to stop users from accessing it. As reported by The Daily Wire, recorded attempts to search for any videos of Meloni returned no results, though the “error” appears to have since been rectified.
One college football player was forced to apologize after praising the video of Meloni on social media.
University of Nebraska’s sophomore starting punter Brian Buschini first responded to a video of the speech, saying, “All glory to God! Love this!”
A day later, Buschini apologized.
“I want to take the time to apologize for a tweet I posted yesterday,” he wrote in a tweet. “I saw a headline from a speech the new Prime Minister of Italy made that seemed to support Christianity and family values. I unfortunately tweeted about this without knowing the background or history of this politician or the movement she is involved with. In no way do I support fascism or racism in any form. I apologize for posting without understanding the reality of what I was posting about.”
All the above were joined by Joe Biden, who Wednesday warned that Italy’s election of its first female prime minister is a threat to democracy.
“Well, folks, you know — and I mean this sincerely; you’re going to think this is a little out of whack what I’m going to talk about — but, you know, democracy is at stake. Literally, there’s a — there’s a case being made around the world, not just here, because democracy and autocracy... You just saw what’s happened in Italy in that election,” said Biden before launching into another invective against “MAGA Republicans.”
