Few arrests as preferred protesters get away with insurrection

For over a month, angry abortion sympathizers have been protesting outside the homes of United States Supreme Court justices who were part of a majority opinion leaked last month that would overturn Roe v. Wade. 

As reported by Frontline News, the leaked draft of the court’s majority opinion suggests that the landmark abortion case is likely to be overturned. Protesters began mobilizing to intimidate the offending justices into upholding Roe. Abortion sympathizer group Ruth Sent Us distributed maps and coordinates of Chief Justice John Roberts’ and Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s homes.   

The protesters did indeed gather outside the justices’ homes, angrily shouting and chanting things like, “No privacy for us, no peace for you,” and “save the fetus, f*** the child.” 

According to 18 U.S. Code § 1507, the protests are entirely illegal. But not only was there no enforcement of the law, there was no condemnation from Biden administration officials or their allies. 

Events continued to spiral, resulting in a near-assassination attempt on Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s life and threats against Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s children. Justice Samuel Alito was reportedly moved to an undisclosed location. 

On Monday last week, abortion sympathizers blocked off access to the United States Supreme Court in an effort to “Shut Down DC” and “Shut down SCOTUS”. 

Few, if any, arrests were made, and despite the attempt to manipulate the U.S. judicial branch through force and intimidation, there were no accusations of insurrection. 

On Friday, seven staffers on the production team for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert were arrested while roaming the Longworth House Office Building, an office building for House Representatives which is part of the Capitol complex. The crew were reportedly let in by Rep. Adam Schiff’s (D-CA) staff after earlier interviewing Schiff, Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-MA), and Stephanie Murphy (D-FL) related to the January 6 Committee hearings.  

The crew members were uninvited, had no passes and no escort. According to reports, the “Colbert 7” were “loud, disruptive” and “theatrical” and were banging on the doors of House Republicans. They were arrested by Capitol police near Rep. Lauren Boebert’s (R-CO) and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) offices and charged with trespassing, the same charge levied at January 6 attendees.  

During the 2018 confirmation hearings for Justice Brett Kavanaugh who was the target of unsubstantiated sexual harassment claims by Christine Ford, hundreds stormed the Capitol building to interfere with the Senate hearings. 

While many arrests were made, none of the rioters were accused of insurrection. Those who were detained – including celebrities Amy Schumer and Emily Ratajkowski – were penalized with a $50 fine. 

On Thursday, physician and attorney Dr. Simone Gold, founder of civil liberties group America’s Frontline Doctors, was sentenced to 60 days in federal prison, 12 months of supervised release and a $9,500 fine for entering the Capitol building on January 6, 2021. Dr. Gold was charged with trespassing. 

The fine was the largest given to any of the January 6 demonstrators, all accused of insurrection. 

Dr. Gold had committed no violence, no vandalism, and immediately left the building when instructed to do so by a police officer. But she was an insurrectionist, which warranted a visit to her home on January 18, 2021, by over a dozen law enforcement agents armed with assault weapons who detained her for two days. 

Dr. Gold likely could have secured the same treatment as the abortion sympathizers, the Late Night with Stephen Colbert crew or Amy Schumer and Emily Ratajkowski. But she had made a crucial mistake. 

She was politically misaligned. 

Had she been an ally to the establishment and Biden administration, Dr. Gold might have been spared. Perhaps, had she danced from a car window on Hollywood Blvd to celebrate Joe Biden’s “election victory,” she would have received a lesser fine. Perhaps, had she worn her fanciest dress to get the COVID-19 injection, she would have received less prison time. Perhaps, had she accused Justice Clarence Thomas of white supremacy, she would not have been visited by over a dozen armed guards. 

Because that’s how you get away with insurrection.
