Canada’s new PM vows more wokeness, takes strong stance against US

Liberal Party members on Sunday night elected former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney to replace Justin Trudeau as prime minister.

Any hope that Trudeau’s replacement would be a moderate who could bridge the widening political divide among Canadians evaporated with Carney’s victory. In a recent campaign speech, Carney attacked Americans for opposing woke ideologies and vowed to strengthen Canada’s devotion to them.

"There is a fever gripping America. And while it rages, Canadians will remain resolute and true to our values. While America engages in a war on woke, Canadians will continue to value inclusiveness,” he said.

Carney, who has never before held elected office, came out swinging against President Donald Trump after his election win, promising supporters that Canada “will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect." Canada earlier this month hiked tariffs on $30 billion worth of American goods by 25% in response to Trump’s similar action. Trump says the Canadian government has not heeded his warnings to crack down on illegal immigration and stem the flow of fentanyl into the US, which kills over 75,000 Americans a year.

Carney on the Freedom Convoy: ‘Sedition’

However, Canada has been slapping high tariffs on American goods for years. Tariffs on dairy products, for example, extend as high as 298%. Chicken products incur tariffs as much as 238%, while egg tariffs climb as high as 163%. Canada also slaps 45% tariffs on certain vehicles, aluminum goods, copper, and more.

In electing Carney, Canada’s Liberal party has chosen to maintain its totalitarian brand. As Breitbart points out, Carney strongly supported draconian COVID-19 mandates. When the Freedom Convoy, a massive protest against COVID restrictions led by truckers, launched in early 2022, Carney accused them of sedition.

“This is sedition. That’s a word I never thought I’d use in Canada,” he wrote then. “By now, anyone sending money to the convoy should be in no doubt: You are funding sedition. Foreign funders of an insurrection interfered in our domestic affairs from the start. Canadian authorities should take every step within the law to identify and thoroughly punish them. The involvement of foreign governments and any officials connected to them should be identified, exposed and addressed,” he added

On Sunday night, Carney won 85.9% of the vote. Only 151,899 out of 400,000 eligible Liberal Party voters turned out, according to CTV. The incoming prime minister will assume office once he forms a new government after Trudeau officially tenders his resignation.
